The German word gesamtkunstwerk loosely translates to “total work of art.” Defining the term is somewhat more complicated as it was not to be used to describe a single object but rather a group of various objects combined to achieve perfect harmony. Within a space, colors, textiles, furniture, decorative objects, and fine art come together, complementing one another and creating a total work of art. I'm currently the senior sales manager at cityFoundry, surrounded by beautiful vintage furniture and decor from the 50s and 60s. In the past, I worked for Christie’s Design Department, so it should come as no surprise that I support what has often been considered a craft (i.e., pottery, furniture, textile design) as fine art in its own right.
Not too long ago, I found myself in a very dark place. My heart had been broken, stomped on, and all aspects of my life changed. As I take on this city alone for the first time, I want to explore and create a total work of art in my life. I hope this project allows me to become a sort of Carrie Bradshaw of NYC’s design scene. Instead of writing about sex and relationships, I’ll write about lighting, wallpaper, and chairs. Because let’s be honest my sex life is rather lacking right now. Anyway… Welcome to my pursuit of gesamtkunstwerk. Join me as I integrate art in all its forms, interview creatives, and live life as a total work of art.
